The Aquatic Center Committee gave a report on their progress to date at a meeting April 26th.  They are recommending that the project move forward to the next stage.  Josephine Motes will give the report at the ACA monthly meeting at Lennard K's restaurant Thursday, May 3, at 7:30 am.  The public is invited to come and comment on the plan.

MARCH UPDATE:

The Allyn Aquatic Center Committee held their 10th meeting on March 13th a work session devoted to finishing tasks for the April report to the Allyn Community Association.  They have a Timeline and Tasks guide, surveys, diagrams and each member is working on their assigned tasks.

They have a preferred site and Pat McCullough is drawing up a site plan.  The school has included them in their site plan and the Boys & Girls Club indicated that they are a viable partner.  They have determined operation costs from other pool facilities. They have a design for the building and approximate costs to build it and are working with the County Auditor, Assessor and Elections department to get help in forming a Metropolitan Park District.

They received many surveys back with public input and are working on money raising ideas.  They will soon have their website up and running. Check there for current information from the committee. They will make a report at the meeting which will be held at the Port of Allyn on April 24th at 7pm.  For more information call Josephine Motes, Chair at 275-9757.

AAC MEETING -FEBRUARY 13, 2007
MINUTES

Present:  Josephine Motes, Chair, Marilyn Hansen, Betty Lund, Andrew Wing, Inez McGregor, James Moy, Laurel Nordstrom, Mark Stiller and Shirlee Hrica.

Marilyn Handed out a list of ways to make money.  A design of a quilt to be raffled was shown.  The logo flag design is final and when produced will sell for $50 each.
There was discussion of various properties availability:
Blair Trust - Park dept. owns it and we might get a portion
     Lakeland - Not interested
Property across from the school still in talking stage
An appointment with the Rotary Club has been set up
Working with Reid Real Estate on Various properties
Letters to 6 owners of large pieces of property have been mailed
A letter was sent to the school board
James reported that the Belfair school is continuing to look for other sites because of the bypass plans.
He noted that Gray's Harbor YMCA required $2 million to open with $1 million for operating expenses coming from memberships, endowments, donations and programs that were developed by the Y.  He was told that if the Y could make changes, they would add more deck space, roughen the walking areas, level out the pool (uneven pool causes drainage problems which equals more expense) and adding a second floor.
He will get floor plans from Port Angeles.

A note of interest: James said “you don't send out a mouse to talk with a lion.” In other words, send out a group of wealthy people to talk with other wealthy people about donations, etc.  He also talked about the various areas within a 15 mile radius and how we compare in yearly incomes.

Laurel Nordstrom mentioned the need for swim programs, such as swimming, diving, swim teams, etc.  Also the need for a good coach and an assistant coach.

Mark Stiffler presented his ideas about a Web site for the Aquatic and Wellness Center.  It could include public access, restricted access, various ways to contact the Center, logo - web pages, PDF to download, and on-line donation forms.  We would in turn send him an invoice which he would use as an IRS benefit.  In other words, he would donate his time.

VARIOUS NOTES:
Partnering with a YMCA will be discussed after the April 24 presentation.  A decision will be made on whether or not the Center will be non-profit or taxed.

An attorney will be needed near the end of planning.

Ideas, plans, etc. must be presented to the Metropolitan Parks and Recreation District (County, State) before March 1st of any year.

If a bond is put on a ballot 51% would be equal to approval.

MEETINGS
There will be a meeting on February 28th at 5:00 PM with Jesse Richardson and Ambia Architects.

Change of date for the April 10 meeting.  It will now be April 17th at 5:30 PM - one week before the presentation to ACA
Next regular meeting will be March 13, 2007

REMINDER
Josephine made certain that everyone was clear on their responsibilities for the April 24th meeting with ACA.  In the appendix of all reports there will be a q     questionnaire, a power point summary from each pool visited and an operation and maintenance budget.

Meeting adjourned at 5:40 PM.

JANUARY REPORT:
AQUATIC AND WELLNESS CENTER
            Beginning to make waves

The Aquatics committee has increased their speed and expanded their
wake to include the concept of wellness, as more community members are
involved in planning a center. Discussion this month, through phone
conference with Bob Appel, Chief Executive Officer of the Public Hospital
District No 1 for Mason General Hospital and Terry Megiveron, Director of
the North Mason Medical Clinic, indicates that they are very appreciative
of the possibility of such an aquatics center and especially one that would
be concerned with wellness programs. We discussed the possibility of
establishing a Dean Ornish cardiac center that would include exercise
prescriptions, weight training, aerobic swim workouts, yoga, and diet planning.

Billie Schmidt, Director of the Boys and Girls Club in Belfair, was interested
in talking with the committee and sharing ways we could work together with
other agencies  in presenting a comprehensive program to encourage healthful
and rewarding activities for the boys and girls of our community, that would
involve an aquatics center.

John Keats, of Mason County Parks and Recreation, has offered to help
with technical knowledge that we will need in developing an aquatic and
wellness center. Other agencies that are being contacted are the YMCA,
and  Harmony Hill Retreat Center. Our Finance Committee has met with
Sarah Crum, Deputy Director for Representative Norm Dicks. Suggestions
for grants and other financial resources were given us. Tori Dulemba of
the Pacific Northwest Salmon Center, has met with our finance committee
members to give us an example of putting together a feasibility study,
so that we could be eligible for such grants. We have information from
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that leads us to believe that we
would be eligible for grants from that foundation.

At our last committee meeting in September, Andrew Wing presented our
first draft drawing of the layout of the building for the center.  Members have
taken this home to study to make changes or to confirm aspects of it.
Matt Charlton, Assistant Superintendent of North Mason School District #403,
reported to the committee that the School District and Administration would
be willing to have further discussions regarding the location of the aquatic
and wellness center near the High School. He felt that such a nearby center
would serve as a mutual benefit for the school and community.

Committee members intend to contact the Chamber of Commerce, The
Lions, The Eagles, The Rotary and other service organizations in our
community to solicit their help in bringing to pass an Aquatic and
Wellness Center for the benefit of all ages.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 24 at 4 PM in the basement of the
Port of Allyn Building. If you would like to serve on any of the committees;
Buildings and Facilities, Finance, Lands and Acquisition, Public Relations
or formation of a Metropolitan Park District, or you are an experienced
Grant Writer, please come to the meeting or call Josephine Motes at
360-275-9757 and leave a message. Our feasibility study is to be completed
by April of 2007. We hope to have all the information and materials we need
at that time to present to the Allyn Community Association for their evaluation.
Help us complete this step, that our speed may increase, that our wake may
be even higher, that our vision may wash over us all.
